James "jim"'s Story

For those who might vaguely remember my name but not really recall who I am, I was a starter on the varsity football team during my junior and senior year, I was in several plays (including our final Spring Play, "Dracula"), I was the Sophomore Class Oratorical speaker, I served in student government, and I lost the election for student body president by 27 votes to my best friend at the time, Mike Clayton. I may be more well-known for being the older brother of Ralph McCormick [Glendale class of 1969] who also played football and was the Junior Class president 1967-1968. Our last semester, I only took four classes and performed at the Glendale Center Theater six nights a week for three months. Unlike our predecessor at Glendale, Marion "Duke" Morrison [aka John Wayne], I did NOT become a theatrical star. After graduation from Glendale High, I moved to Hawaii in August 1967 to enroll at The Church College of Hawaii in Laie. [It is now BYU-Hawaii]. I played rugby on the national championship team there all three years I was in college. Well, I was on the first team each year, but as my standing on the team went up each year our national ranking went down. We were probably still in the top 10 my last year--perhaps even the top 5 [we lost only one game, by 2 points, to the team that was ranked second that year]--but being in Hawaii and not used to losing games, we never bothered to find out. I went on an LDS mission to Indian Reservations in South Dakota from 1968-1970, came bac...Expand for more
k to Hawaii and graduated in June 1972. In November 1972 I married Vika Ita'aehau from a small village in Tonga. In March 1973 I joined the US Air Force and flew as a navigator for almost four years. Then the Air Force sent me to law school, so I attended at BYU in Provo, Utah from 1977 to 1980. I played on the BYU rugby team (first team) until I graduated, at age 31! We had three children born while stationed in San Bernardino, CA from 1974 to 1977, and three more born while I was in law school. My fourth son was born on Guam in 1983 and my fourth daughter was born in Japan in 1988. I retired from the Air Force JAG Corps in 1993 and worked as a civilian attorney for the Air Force at McChord AFB, WA [just south of Tacoma] from Nov 1993 to Feb 2009. That's when I finally left the Air Force . . . and worked for the Navy at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. My wife and I again lived in Laie. In 2012 we returned to Washington state and I retired from Navy civilian service on 31 July 2014. From June 2017 to Dec 2018, Vika & I served as full-time missionaries in Guam assisting Military families, USO, Red Cross, etc., while representing th Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Drop me a line if you wish. If you were kind to me even though I was somewhat obnoxious in high school [some people probably say I still am . . . but I've improved!], you can visit us anytime in Lakewood, Washington. Just email first to make sure we're not out of state at the time . . . Aloha --Jim McCormick
